With the twin pandemics of COVID and systemic racism, our sector has never been more vital. Every day, we protect families and build community. At the same time, we are still mired in many philosophies and practices that are counterproductive. These include funding dynamics, diversity challenges, burnout, and the lack of cultural responsiveness in many of our practices. We’ve been putting up with a whole lot of things that are ineffective. It’s time for us to take a look at what’s working; stop doing what doesn’t; adopt some new philosophies and practices; ground our work in race, equity, diversity, and access; and fully unlock our potential to advance a just and inclusive world.
